As of 2023, the number of English language learners (ELLs) continues to grow worldwide. According to recent statistics, there are approximately 1.5 billion English language learners globally. And around 375 million of those individuals learning English as a second language (ESL).
In the United States alone, there were roughly 5 million ELLs enrollments in K-12 public schools. Roughly 10% of the total student population. The number of ELLs in the US has been steadily increasing over the past decade. The majority of these students come from Spanish-speaking households.
